A dull complexion, poor skin tone, and uneven skin texture are some of the most common effects of photoaging, or the rapid, premature aging of skin cells caused by regular sun exposure. New York’s first-rate team of cosmetic skin care specialists at SINY® Dermatology uses chemical peels, an advanced corrective clinical skin treatment, to diminish the effects of photoaging and restore healthier, younger-looking skin. We provide the full spectrum of medical, cosmetic, and laser dermatology at all six of our offices in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, Park Slope, Brooklyn, the West Village, and the Upper East Side in Manhattan, Forest Hills, Queens, and Southold on Long Island.

Chemical Peels Q & A

What are the effects of photoaging?

An astonishing 90% of the early signs of aging that appear on your face and other areas of frequently exposed skin are a direct result of damaging ultraviolet (UV) light.

Premature skin aging is different from chronological skin aging, in that it actively degrades the underlying structures that help make your skin tissue strong, smooth, and supple. The most common signs of photoaging include:

  • Areas of hyperpigmentation
  • Fine lines around your eyes or mouth
  • Dull, uneven skin tone
  • Spots
  • Leathery, saggy skin texture

Although the effects of photoaging are most noticeable on facial skin, they may appear on your neck, hands, arms, legs, and shoulders.

How can a chemical peel improve my skin?

A chemical peel is a minimally invasive clinical skin treatment that involves applying a carefully formulated chemical solution directly onto your skin to improve damage or reverse the effects of photoaging safely and effectively.

During a chemical peel, a customized solution is gently brushed or rubbed onto your skin. It’s left in place for a specific amount of time, depending on the depth of action that’s required for your skin needs and treatment goals.

As the solution is neutralized and removed, it gently “peels” away the uppermost layer of your skin to reveal:

  • A brighter, more even complexion
  • Fewer dark spots, lines, and wrinkles
  • Smoother, tighter skin texture

Chemical peels are also used to treat chronic acne breakouts and diminish the appearance of acne scars. Depending on your personal needs, a chemical peel may be applied to your entire face or just to specific areas, such as wrinkles around your mouth.

Which chemical peel is right for me?

All chemical peels help exfoliate dead skin cells, clean and tighten pores, and improve skin texture. Deeper peels go one step further, helping to correct uneven skin tone and reduce the appearance of spots, lines, and wrinkles.

A chemical peel’s overall depth of action depends on its ingredients, how it’s applied, and how long it remains on your skin before it’s neutralized. The team at SINY® Dermatology offers two top-tier formulations.

AHA chemical peels

AHA chemical peels, also known as glycolic acid chemical peels, are light, noninvasive peels that are worked into your regular skin care routine for amazing results.

Because it’s so gentle, an AHA chemical peel can be applied weekly, or mixed into milder concentrations and combined with a cleanser for daily use.

TCA chemical peels

Used for mid-depth peeling, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) chemical peels are applied to your face, neck, or virtually any other area of skin that would benefit from deep-action renewal.

Each TCA treatment lasts about 15 minutes, and it may take more than one treatment to obtain optimal results. Because TCA chemical peels are minimally invasive, you can return to your usual routine immediately afterward, with no downtime.
