Excessive Sweating Q & A
What causes excessive sweating?
Excessive sweating, also called hyperhidrosis, occurs virtually anywhere on your body, including your underarms, palms, feet, and face. Around 2% to 3% of the American population suffers from hyperhidrosis.
Your excessive sweating could be caused by a systemic disease such as an infectious, neurologic, or endocrine disease. Certain conditions, including emotional stress or warm environments, can trigger an increase in sweat production.
But many cases of hyperhidrosis occur in people who are otherwise totally healthy and their bodies sweat excessively even when they feel calm and are in cool environments.
Fortunately, whether your hyperhidrosis is caused by another disease or exists on its own, SINY® Dermatology offers effective treatment options.
How is excessive sweating treated?
At SINY® Dermatology, you’ll find two treatments for hyperhidrosis: BOTOX® and miraDry®.
BOTOX
Yes, the same injection that smooths wrinkles from your skin could help reduce your sweating. Botulinum toxin, commonly known as BOTOX, is an FDA-approved treatment for hyperhidrosis.
When injected into the areas where you experience excessive sweating, BOTOX blocks the release of the chemicals that trigger your sweat glands.
You’ll get to enjoy the results of your BOTOX treatment immediately. This treatment doesn’t require any recovery time.
MiraDry
MiraDry is a procedure designed to permanently destroy the sweat and odor glands in your underarms. To begin the process, your SINY® Dermatology practitioner numbs your underarm area, ensuring you can relax comfortably during the entire treatment.
Then, they apply the miraDry handheld device to the surface of your skin. The device gently sucks your skin toward it, then delivers therapeutic heat to the underarm area while cooling the surface of your skin.
That heat reaches into the deeper layers of your underarm, permanently destroying the sweat and odor glands there.
MiraDry treatments usually take an hour from start to finish. You can continue on with your day immediately after.
Are the results from these treatments permanent?
BOTOX injections aren’t permanent, but the results can last up to a year. SINY® Dermatology can repeat the injections as needed to keep you dry and comfortable.
MiraDry is a permanent solution.
